When the 18th Maccabiah kicks off In Israel in July, it will be a true family affair for the Sankar’s.
Not only will brothers’ Dan and Dave team up to represent Canada’s over 35 soccer squad at the Jewish Olympics, but their extended families will tag along for the trip of a lifetime.
“It’s going to be a real family adventure for us,” says Dan, 40.
“I’m really looking forward to being in the Promised Land with the whole family and of course, I’m excited about the soccer.”
Since they were small kids growing up in Oakville, Ont., the Sankar boys have been regulars on the soccer field.
Dan, who is a striker, has ventured as far as India and Mexico to play.
Dave, 44, plays a sharp brand of defence, but Dan notes his older bro can also let loose a wicked shot when needed.
“If we ever get into a shootout situation, then I think the coach should look to Dave,” advises Dan. “I’ve never seen him miss a penalty shot.”
The road to the Maccabiah has been a bumpy one for Dan.
Last year, he tore the meniscus in his left knee and underwent surgery. He’s been hard at work for months getting in shape.
The brothers and the entire Canadian contingent will surely have their hands full, facing off against the star-studded soccer nations of South America and of course, the home team.
But the stiff competition hasn’t kept the Sankar’s from having big dreams for the Games.
“I would really like to shoot for gold,” says Dan.
“I think if we do our thing and get a bounce or two our way, we have a shot at it.”
