When I was a university student, I was introduced to the real-world of Israeli-Canadian connections while working a summer job for a dynamic, non-profit organization called Israel Children’s Centres (ICC).
Since 2009 marks the 10th anniversary of my time at ICC and it encompasses the spirit of this blog, I think this is the perfect place to tell you about this extraordinary cause.
As the largest social service agency in Israel working for kids, ICC supports some 9,000 children at 14 centres across the Holy Land where they participate in sport-based programs, with particular emphasis on my favourite sport, tennis.
In addition to promoting physical activity, these initiatives provide a bounty of social and emotional benefits, from boosting self confidence and cooperation, to enhancing concentration, discipline and respect.
A credo of ICC is being open to all Israelis, and they stay true to this belief by providing programs especially geared to Israel’s Druze population, developmentally challenged kids, immigrant groups and joint Israeli-Arab programs.
I am proud of the fact that Canada is the highest provider of funding per capita of ICC, supporting it for the last 30 years.
Canucks raise funds for ICC in a variety of ways, including hosting the Annual SmartCentres Charity Golf Classic, as well as the York Racquets ProAm.
