Fighting for Disabled Israeli Children

It’s incredible when you see people rise from experiences of extreme tragedy and create good things in the world instead of wallowing in their pain.

Israeli Maj.-Gen. Doron Almog was in Toronto in June to further his fight for Aleh, an Israeli network of residential facilities for kids with severe physical and cognitive abilities.

Almog founded Aleh in 2002, and two years later started building the Aleh Negev-Nachalat Eran Rehab Village for disabled children and young adults. Not far from Ofakim in the Negev, Nachalat Eran is named for Almog’s son Eran, who died of cancer in 2007. He was 23 at the time, and autistic.

“We always thought our son would live longer and would be able to make use of this village for his whole life,” Almog said in an article in the Canadian Jewish News. “We wanted to guarantee his future care”.

In his work at Nachalat Eran, it’s easy to see that Almog is a true fighter. Yes, he’s a decorated IDF soldier, and he helped with Operation Moses in 1984. But his battles continue away from the IDF and they are noble to say the least.

Almog told the CJN that in his years of military service, he was always privileged to be surrounded by “the best soldiers in the battlefield,” but the children he helps through Aleh need him and others to be their soldiers in the battle against autism and cognitive disabilities.

Nachalat Eran has room for 114 residents and treats 3,000 children as outpatients. Almog is fundraising to increase that number to 250 residents and 12,000 outpatients in the next few years.
